This is something that happened to me back in 2011.

In college I was invited to go camping with some friends. We were going up into the mountains to a certain area famous for strange rock formations and “extraterrestrial sightings.” I didn’t give much credence to that last part, since it was also pretty well-known as a place for recreational drug use.

The first day didn’t start off very well, as the guy organizing the excursion had exaggerated how close the site was. We arrived at the 300-person village hours later than planned, and it was too dark to hike the rest of the way up the mountain to get to the campsite. A nice local man took us to his bean field just outside of town and let us camp in a clearing there.

We set up our tents, then made a fire and sat around drinking and eating crackers and chatting. Normal college kid stuff.

At some point, we all moved into one of our three tents and talked in there. When we decided to sleep, two of the guys asked us if they could sleep in the tent with us since it was cold. Now, I was mad at one of the guys because he’d messed up organizing our trip and for some other personal reasons, so I kicked them out. I didn’t care if they thought I was a bitch, or if they got cold.

I thought the thick sleeping bag I’d borrowed would be pretty warm. I was wrong. I ended up shivering. I had volunteered to sleep by the door of the tent, so I was only getting extra body heat from one other person. It was pretty miserable and I only managed a shallow sleep.

I woke up to something poking my side through the wall of the tent. I assumed it was one of the guys I’d kicked out of our tent.

“What the hell do you want?” I half-yelled, not wanting to wake up the other girls in the tent. The poking stopped. I tried to go back to sleep. But as soon as I was nodding off again, the thing start poking me harder.

“Stop it,” I hissed, then swatted at the thing through the thin tent wall.

Instead of going away, a body flopped down right up against the tent, causing the tent lining to bulge in. I figured the guy had been kicked out of his tent, since pretty much everyone was upset with him. I kicked the body a few times, but it didn’t budge. I could feel it breathing deeply thought the nylon: he was asleep.

I was officially furious with our friend. But he was also a very large lump of warmth right by my side on a cold mountain night, so I ended up drifting off to sleep again. I woke up a couple more times in the night– I think I ended up spooning him. And if I realized that the body I had pressed up against me didn’t exactly have the shape of a man, well, I was warm and sleepy enough not to care.

The last time I woke up, the body was gone and it was light outside. I crawled out off the tent to see the guys’ tent had collapsed. No wonder he had abandoned it in the middle of the night. I laughed and went to pee in the bean field.

Later when we were hiking up the mountain, we started making fun of the two guys for having their tent collapse.

“No wonder you crawled out to sneak into our tent,” I teased. “Which one of you tried to cuddle with me?”

They looked confused. No one had left their tents the entire night.
